Fort Casey

The day after visiting the locks, we drove north almost to Canada.  We were planning on taking the ferry to Whidbey Island but the wait was 90 minutes so we decided to drive up and around (a very long drive) instead of waiting.  Even though it was a long drive, it was beautiful.  We drove over a bridge that was 400 feet above the water and through some gorgeous forests. 

Finally, we made it to Fort Casey, which is a decommissioned army base that was built in the late 1890's.  It is amazing to me that over 100 years ago there were men who lived there and built such things to protect our country.  Walking where they lived and worked was a very reverent feeling.  I am so grateful for all those men and women who have worked and fought to protect our freedoms and for those who are doing it today. 

Almost immediately after construction was finished here, they stopped using the fort when the airplane was invented in 1903 because it was too exposed and vulnerable to air attacks.  The fort was reopened during WWII for a time and then closed again after the war. 

I LOVE learning history in this way...ya know, with my hubby, our baby girl and our cute pooch.  Much better than Mr. Wayment's approach and just reading chapters and answering the questions at the end.  (Weber High reference, don't worry if you don't get it.)
